2018 Point Series Explained

In 2018 the Steamboat Springs Running Series (SSRS) will be utilizing the points system that was established many years ago.  This system is based on all of the comments provided by runners throughout the years, as well as our own experience as racers.  For age groups we will continue to point the series as we have in the past, in 10-year age increments. We realize that there will always be age groups that are more competitive and that those age groups may vary throughout the years. The SSRS is a nonprofit, grass roots volunteer organized running series, and we do not have the means for age group awards at each race or 5-year increment awards at the end of the season.

Overwhelmingly we have received comments about the inequality of longer races being pointed the same as shorter races due to length and difficulty, but we also know that some racers prefer the shorter 5K and 10K’s.  We will once again be pointing MOST, but not all, of the race distances throughout the season to make the series fair.  What we hope is that the best runners will emerge through a VARIETY of races and distances run.  In order to be eligible for end of season running series age group or overall awards you MUST RUN AT LEAST 3 races throughout the season and you MUST RUN the longer distance of a certain race (if offered) in AT LEAST TWO EVENTS (exception - 19 & under age group).  What we do not want is for people to cherry pick easier races based on distance or past participant levels but we do want people to have freedom to choose the distances that they like.  We think this will once again shake things up as we now have everything in the series from road 5K's to mountain ultras.

We love our series participants; you are the backbone of this event.  We feel that our series is truly unique.  What we hope is that if you choose to keep track of your points and compete in the series, that you will find a good variety of distances to participate in.  Due to the nature of the schedule very few people will be able to run every race in the series thus opening it up to the best all around runners winning the points series.

The following races will be pointed in the 2018 Steamboat Springs Running Series:

  • Hayden Cog (8M)
