Course Description:

16 mile Course Description

  • This trail race beings at the beautiful Fish Creek Falls parking lot at the top of Fish Creek Falls Rd.
  • From here runners will follow the Fish Creek Falls trail to the first aid station at the East end of Long Lake (aid station #1)
  • Runners will turn around and run back on the Fish Creek Falls trail to the left turn onto the Mountain View Trail.
  • Continue on the Mountain View Trail ending up at the summit of Mt. Werner (and the Steamboat Ski Area – aid station #2).
  • Next you will follow Pete’s Wicked Trail, Cathy’s Cutoff, Sunshine and Chisolm trail (dirt road) down to the top of the Gondola.  This proposed addition of single track trail as opposed to running down Storm Peak Challenge (dirt road) as in years past, will increase the distance on this event from 15.0M to just under 16 miles (15.82M exactly).
  • After a post-race prize drawing, runners can take the gondola down for free.
  • Total distance on this course is 16 miles and it is 90%+ on single track, <10% USFS dirt roads and 0% pavement!
  • The course climbs a total of 4,800 ft. with much of that in the first 6 miles and descends 3,200 ft.

Aid Stations

  • Aid Station 1 – Long Lake (9,850 ft. and 6.1 miles)
  • Aid Station 2 – Mt. Werner (10,360 ft. and 12.6 miles)
  • Finish Line – Top of the Steamboat Ski Area gondola (9,061 ft. and 16.0 miles)
  • There will be NO cups at these two aid stations!
  • You must bring and be prepared to carry your own water bottle and/or hydration pack.
  • Runners must carry their own hydration device for water and should carry some Honey Stinger (which will be provided at the race start) or other type of energy food.
  • Please consider carrying a light shell in case the weather changes throughout the day.
  • We will have water & Tailwind at the aid stations to refill your device.

Cut-offs: The 16M race has over 4,500 ft. of elevation gain, with the high point on the course at 10,420 ft. Rough estimates for the 50K are 6,000 ft. of elevation gain, with much of the distance covered at or above 10,000 ft. The safety of our runners is our number one concern. Due to the popularity of this race and the remoteness on parts of the trail system, we have in the past enforced a strict 4 hour cut-off rule for the 16M race.  This year we can extend that cutoff to 5.5 hours since we have an added longer race. The 50K cut-off time will be 8 hours. This ensures that everyone can download on the gondola and our race support teams are not out on the course all day. In other words be prepared to enjoy these beautiful trails. We will also be enacting aid station specific cut-offs for the 50K and will publish that information closer to the event.

Special Considerations: In an effort to put on a more sustainable trail running race, we have eliminated all cups from both race courses. Be prepared to carry your own water on the course and to refill your device at the aid stations.

Friends and Family: Please be aware that any friends and family that would like to be at the finish will have to hike, bike or pay to ride the Gondola to the race finish at the top of the gondola.

Pets: Leashed dogs are welcome on the 16M course only.  Please be courteous at the start when the field is in close proximity on narrow single track.

Weather Policy: We have updated our weather policy to include the monsoons of 2014.  Therefore, we will run in rain or shine or snow but we will not run on the trails when conditions threaten the safety of our runners and/or when the runner’s feet threaten the delicate trail system that we operate on.  Decisions to cancel the race will never be taken lightly and will only be a last resort.
